Top Cat is an animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera and first broadcast on ABC (US) between 1961 and 1962. Featuring the voice talents of Arnold Stang, Allen Jenkins, Maurice Gosfield, Leo DeLyon, Marvin Kaplan and John Stephenson, the series followed the exploits of Top Cat (called T.C. by close friends) and his gang of Manhattan alley cats. Inspired by The East Side Kids movies of the 1940s and The Phil Silvers Show (a TV show from the late 1950s), the plots revolved around the gang’s scams to earn money, which lead to the local beat cop (Charles "Charlie" Dibble) trying to evict them from the alley. The popularity of the series was such that “dibble” entered the vernacular – as slang for a police officer. In the UK, the series was broadcast on the BBC between 1962 and 1989, initially as Top Cat, but swiftly renamed to The Boss Cat (1962) and then Boss Cat (1967). This avoided a conflict with a popular British cat food called Top Cat (as the BBC cannot carry advertising). Certain edits were made to accommodate this change, but the dialogue and theme tune were left unchanged, which meant that it was always referred to as Top Cat by viewers.
