Star Wars is a world-wide pop culture phenomenon. It was originally released as a film on May 25, 1977 by 20th Century Fox (as Star Wars) and was only later re-titled ‘Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope’. It is set “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….” and is an epic space opera fairytale. It was the first in the originally trilogy, which has subsequently generated three prequel films and is now in the process of being added to further. In 1980, George Lucas, who created the franchise, said that it was (at that point) a nine-part saga that has a beginning, a middle and an end. It progresses over a period of about fifty or sixty years with about twenty years between trilogies, each trilogy taking about six or seven years.
R2-D2 (or simply "R2") is a key and iconic character in all of the Star Wars films. A robot (actually an astromech droid), it was designed by Ralph McQuarrie, developed by John Stears and built by Tony Dyson. Inducted into the Robot Hall of Fame in 2003, the Smithsonian Institute included R2-D2 in its list of 101 Objects that Made America.
