Released in 1978, Space Invaders was one of the pioneers of modern computer gaming and its wide popularity and success helped expand the industry from a novelty pursuit to a global industry. On the game’s release in Japan there was even a temporary shortage of 100-yen coins (used to play the game) and by 1982, it had grossed $2 billion worldwide. The icon for the aliens has become a pop culture touchpoint and is often used as a shorthand for computer games as a whole. Part of the appeal of the game was the ease of its gameplay. The player had the ‘simple’ aim of defeating waves of aliens descending upon them, with a laser cannon, to earn as many points as possible. Developed by Tomohiro Nishikado, it was originally manufactured and sold as an arcade game by Taito.
