Nearly 18,000 comic strips cover the almost fifty years that Peanuts ran, syndicated, in newspapers across the world, make it "arguably the longest story ever told by one human being". That human being was Charles M. Schulz, who wrote and illustrated the strips from 1950 to 2000. Including the widespread merchandise, it earned him more than $1billion and reprints still run today. It is probably the most influential comic strip in history, making the four-panel format the standard. Originally it was one of several strips which blossomed in the 1950s, and weaved complex themes from sociology, philosophy and psychology into the humorous episodes which involved the intertwined relationships between the characters. It concerned a miniature society of small children (adults weren’t shown) which orbited Charlie Brown – an often nervous and meek boy who generally (despite occasional victories) suffers and despairs, yet somehow remains optimistic.

The Peanuts cartoon strip is often mistakenly called ‘Snoopy’ due to the phenomenal popularity of the character since he first appeared in 1950. Charlie Brown's pet beagle was inspired by Spike, one of childhood dogs of Charles M. Schulz, the author. Known for his flights of fancy, he fantasises to escape his otherwise dull existence – but his dream-bound endeavours are always doomed to failure. Often seen sitting atop his kennel, his "novels" remain unpublished and, in his World War 1 battles, the Red Baron (his imaginary nemesis) repeatedly shoots down brave Snoopy in his Sopwith Camel.
