Soap has a long history. In the 20th Century, the first main advance was that of synthetic detergents in Germany in 1916, but commercially available soap, as we would recognise it today, was born during the First World War. Up until the 1930's, soap was produced using batch kettle boiling but Procter & Gamble created and refined a continuous process which shortened the production time considerably (to under a day) and this process is still used. Olive oil soaps were originally hand-crafted in the Mediterranean region – and prized as a natural skin cleanser. They also had some medicinal properties, helping with skin irritations. Known to be kind to skin, and usable on all skin types, it is still a popular way to naturally protect skin from pollutants.
