First appearing in Captain America Comics (1941, Timely / Marvel Comics) and created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America is a super-soldier fighting in the Second World War and was a hugely popular figure of the time. With superhero popularity in general fading after the war, his comic ceased in 1950, but had a short revival in 1953 before being renewed in 1964.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Hulk first appeared in The Incredible Hulk (1962, Marvel Comics) and was a large green superhuman character with seemingly no limitations, who becomes increasingly powerful as he gets more angry. His quiet, reserved and psychologically distinct alter ego is Bruce Banner, who mutates into the Hulk when stressed or angry.

Based on Norse mythology, Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery (1962, Marvel Comics) and was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. The Asgardian god of thunder, he also has a powerful hammer (Mjolnir) and can fly and control the weather.

Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense (1963, Marvel Comics) and was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby. The birth of the character comes when Tony Stark, an American billionaire businessman and engineer, is injured when kidnapped and forced to create a weapon - instead he builds a robotic armoured suit which both saves his life and allows him to escape. He later enhances the suit and becomes Iron Man.
