ThunderCats is an animated series produced by Rankin/Bass which was broadcast in the US between 1985 and 1989 and featured the voice talents of Larry Kenney, Earle Hyman, Earl Hammond, Lynne Lipton, Bob McFadden, Peter Newman, Doug Preis and Gerrianne Raphael. The catchy opening theme was performed by the rock group Heart. Following the exploits of a group of cat-like (but humanoid) creatures on a planet called Third Earth, it was based on characters created by Tobin "Ted" Wolf and the animation was provided by Pacific Animation Corporation (in Japan). Fleeing their dying home world, Thundera, the ThunderCats’ spaceships are attacked by their enemies (the Mutants of Plun-Darr) and damage to their flagship requires a course-change to Third Earth, where they land safely and create a new home base, the "Cat's Lair". On this new planet they face the joint threat of the Mutants (who have followed them there) and an ancient mummified sorcerer called “Mumm-Ra the ever living”.
Lion-O (voiced by Larry Kenney) is the ThunderCats leader - the "Lord of the ThunderCats." His weapons are the legendary Sword of Omens, which fires energy bolts and affords him "Sight Beyond Sight"(to see great distances) – and a Claw Shield (a gauntlet), which can fire grappling lines through its claws. Only twelve years old when Thundera was destroyed, he became an adult during the journey to Third Earth. Although physically an adult, with strength, cunning and skills, in many ways he remains a child and the series is his journey to learn maturity and leadership.
