Starting as a meat-flavoured gravy powder, Bisto began in 1908, and was a massive success, adding a much richer flavour and aroma to gravy across the UK. Invented by Mr Roberts & Mr Patterson, the word "Bisto" comes from its actions – as it "Browns, Seasons and Thickens in One". The Bisto Kids were created by Will Owen in 1919 and were also hugely popular. A boy and girl in ragged clothes, they would catch the wafting scent of Bisto in the air and longingly declare, "Aah, Bisto!" The next major development to the product was Bisto Granules in 1979, a dried gravy substitute which dissolves in hot water to form a gravy substitute.
