Tetris was released in 1984. A puzzle strategy game involving differently shaped, tiled, pieces falling and connecting with each other, it was created by Russian game developer Alexey Pajitnov – and it became the first to be exported from the USSR to the USA. The name comes from the Greek “tetra” – a numerical prefix for four (all pieces contain four tiles) - and “tennis”, his favourite sport. The pieces are also known as “tetrominoes” - a special type of polyominoes (so named by Solomon W. Golomb in 1953) - which have featured in puzzles since 1907 at least. With over 170 million copies sold, nearly every game console, operating system, mobile phone or other computing item can run some variation of the game. It was the version for the Nintendo Game Boy (launched in 1989) which has made it one of the most popular games ever played.
