A floppy disk (or micro diskette, micro disk, micro floppy, floppy, diskette or disk) is a square, flat storage medium which incorporates a thin and flexible magnetic storage disk sealed in a square plastic case lined with a protective and dust-removing fabric. Created in the early 1980s by a consortium of 21 companies, the 3½-inch floppy disk (90mm) was similar to a Sony design, but had been improved to accommodate both single- and double-sided disks. Accessed by a floppy disk drive, single-sided drives launched in 1983, double sided in 1984 and double-sided, high-density 1.44 MB drives (which became the most popular) became available in 1986.
