Officially Mickey Mouse’s pet, the animated cartoon character Pluto (or Pluto the Pup) appeared with his master 24 times before being granted a starring role in 1937. A mid-sized, short-haired cross-breed dog, with orangey hair and black ears, Pluto is not anthropomorphic (beyond facial expressions) and not dressed. He also does not speak (there are a few exceptions to this general rule) so generally relies on physical humour to express his personality. Created in 1930 by Walt Disney Productions, he appeared in 89 short films up to 1953.
